Biography and program proposals
To read about our concert proposals, or for further information about chamber symphonism and our activities, please download our instrumental ensemble’s dossier for 2009.
ConjuntXXI! is dedicated to creation and production of concerts and musical performances, from a new point of view which includes an additional value to our proposals. More than just a list of works put together, we would like our concerts to be an actual experience with more integrated elements other than music, such as a theme line or a relationship with the hall or space where the performance is held.
In order to do so, ConjuntXXI! acts in two basic lines (for further information, please read about our past activities):
-Creation and production of artistic proposals
- Musical activities in concerts, based upon our 13-instrument ensemble, which dedicates to performance of chamber symphonism (a term introduced by ConjuntXXI!)
What do we do?
By chamber symphonism we would like to refer to our aim of combining the best experiences in both symphonic and chamber music in the same ensemble. Our group so would stand in the middle of two different ways of seeing music, being half symphonic orchestra, half chamber group.
With 13 musicians, timbrical diversity is guaranteed in order to provide almost all the instruments that conform a symphonic orchestra and its many musical colors. As a result of this, most part of our repertoire comes from symphonic works that our composers’ team has arranged specifically for our ensemble.
In chamber symphonism we can then find spectacular moments that compare to orchestral tutti alternating with more intimate passages in the style of chamber music, where a dialogue between the instruments can be easily established.
This format would be specially indicated for medium size halls (i. e. 100 to 600 p. capacity), where the effect of nearness of the ensemble can be appreciated in a way that would be more difficult with a symphonic orchestra.
What is chamber symphonism?
The experience for the audience is usually very exciting. For those who already knew the works in their orchestral version, it means a new discovery of the piece: most of the times they are surprised of its similarity with the original symphonic version, even when it is played by far fewer musicians. On the other hand, for those who did not know the works previously, chamber symphonism becomes a different way of discovering symphonic repertoire, perhaps from a closer perspective.
At the same time, the existance of a theme or line in the program is often qualified as a positive value, as the concert becomes much more than just a list of works one after the other. The performances - which usually are about one hour long, with no break - are seen as a whole in which, apart from the music you can hear, the audience has the opportunity to find relationships between the pieces, or search for non-musical associations based in the program.
How is the experience?
ConjuntXXI! started off inside ESMUC (Catalonia School of Music) as a project of self-management and relationship between the various jobs of the musical world. Since 2006 it has become an independent group dedicated to the production and creation of musical activities, along with its instrumental group, which performs “chamber symhponism”.
During these years, ConjuntXXI! has worked on musical production with La Fura dels Baus theater company in their version of Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo inside the company’s ship NAUMON. The instrumental group performed a series of concerts inside ths ship as well, planned to contextualize the operas performed at the Gran Teatre del Liceu with scene by La Fura dels Baus. In spring 2008 the group has started a series of concert called Drops of music at the Agbar Museum of Water, in interaction with the concepts exposed at the museum. Last December the group offered the concert of the exhibition “Juli González: Retrospectiva” at the National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC), in collaboration with the Barcelona Auditiorium.
Since this season 2008-09, ConjuntXXI! is assuming the artistical production of the Young Performers Series of concerts at the Barcelona Auditorium, and since November they also produce a series of concerts called “Els dimarts amb el ConjuntXXI!” at the Mas i Mas Foundation Chamber Hall.
ConjuntXXI! has always thought of giving its activities a maximal diffusion. Since the concerts at NAUMON, the group has established a collaboration with Catalunya Música, the catalan classical music broadcasting, who advertises and records their concerts. At the same time, the websites created for some of the concerts provide with additional information and contents.
